Wessty - A Portrait

Wessty is me, David Wesst, a work  with ANVIL Digital. The name “Wessty” was given to me by my high school English teacher who needed to label our workbooks which we handed in weekly to have our assignments marked. For most he labelled with their name, but for me he decided to label it “Wessty”. People found it amusing, and starting calling me that (in the real world) and eventually I ported it over to the Internet which has been my online identity for quite sometime now.

A Brief History

Just to be clear, my history on how I have become the computer scientist that I am now is not exactly the typical one. I mean, I did use a computer (a Commodore 64 to be specific) since before I could read, but other than being your regular kid using a computer for games and homework, I didn’t have much interest in software development or programming. I didn’t take computer science class in high school, nor did I ever take the time to try and program anything for fun on my spare time. See, I wanted to be a doctor and left high school all ready to take on the world. Then I realized something: I didn’t like the all the classes I was taking to get into med school. I suppose the fact that I figured it out early on is a good thing, but when you spend four years of your life knowing what you want to do only to find out you hate the preliminary work that is required, it leaves you a bit lost.

In any case, I decided that I would sign up for another year of classes and take things that I might find interesting. While going through the University of Manitoba general calendar, I came across a class called “Computer Science 1″. I thought to myself, “I like computers, and I like science things, I suppose I will like this class”. I didn’t like it enough apparently as I managed to get a D. So, I decided I would do it again, except this time I would go to class. This time, I got a B and was able to continue on in the Computer Science program. The second year, was the same where I sweaked by with C’s and a couple of B’s scattered around, but I made it through. Then third year, the year where things are supposed to get really hard came up. I was introduced to topics like artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction and things changed. I found my passion.

To sum up everything, I started out with a GPA of 1.25 in my first year, and ended by getting a Bachelor of Computer Science, with Honours and Co-operative Option from the University of Manitoba. It was an exceptionally hard road, but I wanted it and so I did what needed to be done. Plain and simple. Also, don’t think that the degree I got was some kind of joke because I started out failing at school and ended up with that degree. They usually only give out between about 20 and 30 of those per graduating class, and the program starts out with about 100 or so students that end up dropping down to the regular Bachelor of Science, where they major in Computer Science. My degree is awesome, and I am quite proud of myself for going from failure to success.

What is Wesstyware?

Wesstyware is a dream of mine. See, I have always wanted to run my own business, even before I entered the world of software development. As I went through school and fell into the beautiful world of Computer Science, I decided that the name of my company would be Wesstyware as it just seemed to fit as I figured I would probably end up building a company that revolved around software development in some way, shape, or form. Currently, Wesstyware is nothing more than the name of my professional blog, but with time I hope to use it to describe my complete professional presence on the web, whether that be a software company or just a software community. Either way, the name “Wesstyware” represents everything that I, Wessty, help produce in the world of software.
